SC/ST Act: Cabinet approves Bill to Restore Original Provisions of SC & ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act
The Union Cabinet has approved to the Bill, to reinstate provisions protecting the Dalit communities, which seems to be a step to woo Dalit voters and prevent recurrence of violent protest.
This comes just a week ahead of the Bharat Bandh called by Dalit groups on 9th August.
Earlier in March 2018, the Supreme Court of India had introduced just a few safeguards in the law, related to arrest, which Dalit leaders & organisations alleged to have diluted the Act & rendered it toothless, thereby creating outrage.
