About the Exam
The Patent Agent exam is conducted by the India Patent Office (IPO). This exam tests the applicants for complete knowledge of Indian Patent Acts, patent drafting skills and interpretation abilities etc.
The exam is conducted in Mumbai, Delhi, Nagpur, Chennai and Kolkata. The qualifiers of this exam become legally certified (i.e. through a unique Patent Agent Number) by the Indian Patent Office to help corporates, institutions or individuals in filing their innovations and charge them as per their services.
The Patent Agent Exam 2022
The Controller General of Patents invites online applications from eligible candidates under Section 126 of the Patents Act, 1970, willing to appear in Patent Agent Examination 2022.
- Date of the Examination: May 8, 2022
- Registration Opening Date: November 22, 2022; 2 PM
- Registration Closing Date: December 27, 2021, by 5:30 PM
Eligibility criteria
The eligibility criteria to appear in the Indian Patent Agent Exam are as follows:
• Candidate shall be a citizen of India
• Completed the age of 21 years; and
Has obtained a degree in Science, Engineering or Technology, from any University established under the law for the time being in force in the territory of India or possesses such other equivalent qualifications as the Central Government may specify.
Sessions
The examination will be conducted in two sessions namely:
- Paper-I
- Type: Objective
- Duration: 2-hours
- Paper-II
- Type: Descriptive
- Duration: 3 hours
Exam Pattern
- Paper 1: Patent Act and Rules
- Maximum Marks: 100 marks
- Paper 2: Drafting and interpretation of Patent specification and other documents
- Maximum Marks: 100 marks
After qualifying both the examination Paper 1 and Paper 2 there will be a Viva-Voce of 50 marks which is usually based on domain knowledge of science and IPR.
