4th LILY THOMAS ESSAY COMPETITION, 2023

About Lily Thomas Essay Competition 4th Edition, 2023

TOPIC-1 “EXPANDING CONTOURS OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) AND ITS EFFECTS ON THE RIGHT TO PRIVACY”

The right to privacy is a distinct and independent fundamental right under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution. Privacy encompasses the body and mind, including decisions, choices, information, and freedom.

As quoted in the case of K. S. Puttaswamy by Chief Justice of India Dr. D.Y. Chandrachud, “Privacy is concomitant with the right of the individual to exercise control over his or her personality. It finds an origin in the notion that there are certain rights which are natural to or inherent in a human being. Natural rights are inalienable because they are inseparable from the human personality. The human element in life is impossible to conceive without the existence of natural rights.”

Provide your perspective on the privacy laws and legal developments relating to artificial
intelligence at both the national and international level.

TOPIC-3 “INTEGRITY AND ETHICS IN THE LEGAL PROFESSION: A MUST”

Legal profession is a noble profession. There are times when lawyers are portrayed as crusaders for justice, and at other times, in the opposite light. Recently, Chief Justice of India, Dr. D.Y. Chandrachud, stated “We all sleep with our conscience. You can fool the whole world but can’t fool your conscience. It keeps on asking questions every night. Integrity is the core of the legal profession. With integrity we will either continue to survive or we will self-destruct”

Justice V.R. Krishna lyer once stated, “Law is not a trade, not briefs, not merchandise, and so the heaven of commercial competition should not vulgarise the legal profession.” As the famous saying of Mr. Alan K. Simpson goes, “If you have integrity, nothing else matters. If you don’t have integrity, nothing else matters.”
